More from the madwives
We digress from MTAS for a moment to take another quick look at the Independent Midwives, or “madwives” as Dr Crippen prefers to call them.
These are the people who believe in home births and whose minds are closed to any argument, however rational, that suggests that home births are dangerous.
All doctors have medical negligence insurance either through private companies such as the Medical Protection Society or, for some in the hospital service, from the Crown. Dr Crippen has never been sued. Yet. I do not know what tomorrow’s post will bring. I am human. I take comfort from that fact that if I do make some dreadful mistake at least the victim of that mistake will be properly compensated.
There are plenty of insurance companies that will insure doctors. It is profitable business. Insurance companies are in business to make profits. They are guided by science and actuaries, not emotion.
There is not a single insurance company in the country that is prepared to cover independent madwives to do home deliveries.
So what do the madwives do? They work without insurance.
Private midwives have been without indemnity insurance since 2002, when the last company willing to provide cover pulled out. Despite this, their numbers have grown from about 40 in 2002 to 200 at present, with up to 4,000 babies a year delivered privately. (The Times)The madwives thus show the same disregard as people who drive cars without insurance. Car drivers can go to jail for driving without insurance.
Now the government is going to force the madwives to get themselves properly insured, or stop working.
Annie Francis, spokeswoman for the Independent Midwives’ Association, said: “If the Government decides that private midwives cannot be exempt from this new law, or will not help us to find a company to insure us at a rate that midwives can afford, we will not longer be able to offer care to . . . mothers.”This, in a nutshell (? nutcase) shows why Dr Crippen has no time for madwives. Well meaning? Possibly. Ignorant zealots more likely. Arrogant and blinkered – definitely.
Independent midwives tell mothers-to-be verbally and in writing at the first meeting that they are not covered for claims. “Most clients understand you can’t insure against things going wrong during childbirth, only against negligence, and negligence is not really an issue for us,” she said.
Consider that statement:
“Most clients understand you can’t insure against things going wrong during childbirth, only against negligence, and negligence is not really an issue for us,” she said.“…negligence is not really an issue for us”
They will never accept that home births are dangerous and that they, indeed, are dangerous.
Arrogant, ignorant, dangerous fools.

You say in your uninformed rant that independent midwives are people whose minds are closed to any argument, however rational, that suggests that home births are dangerous. Where do you get your info from? At present a huge study is being undertaken into the safety of home birth by the National perinatal epidemiology unit. This will be the first UNBIASED study into place of birth safety. I suggest you wait until the results are out until you decide how dangerous it is to have a baby at home!
You obviously do not keep up to date with latest government recommendations. Try reading "Maternity Matters" If you can! These women who choose to have a home birth have just that CHOICE!!!! Much better to have an experienced independent midwife, who understands normality present at a home birth rather than someone who I guess has never been present at one.
You have confirmed what midwives have always thought....What's the difference between God and a medic? God doesn't think he is a doctor. Thank the Lord that the doctors that I work with are a little more enlightened than you, and actually have trust in their midwifery colleagues.
And just for your information...I am NOT an independent Midwife but still find your comments offensive and born of a limited knowledge base. Please don't ever come to the West Midlands, the midwives in the region will eat you for breakfast
The term 'arrogant' is one that I would reserve for my own profession: that of an MD.
You use the word zealot in a negative way, saying that impassioned people are flawed because they are non-objective, they are biased. But then you use biased reteric throughout this blog entry. It begins with the first line: the caption of the photo. That caption should read something like: modeled depiction of a prolapsed umbilical cord--NOT unexpected prolapse. And it is peppered with bias throughout. I can say that, objectively.
Of course, I am biased. I am a medical student whose partner just gave birth in our home, successfully and beautifully. We were within walking distance of our hospital, should we needed a transfer. That is an important detail to note, and as you say in your other post, the main problem with the 'home birth tragedy'.
Interestingly, I found this page because I google imaged prolapsed umbilical cord.
Also, please don't use the term madwives, although it is comical in the British sense, it is offensive.
Such was the case when second life linden labs decided to pull the plug on several banks in the game. Some of these banks offered the system to buy lindens what real life banks would an interest rate. Some people get their secondlife money out of the banks says that Second Life depositors may have US$ 750,000 in real life money. The new rules state that only banks with proof of an applicable government registration statement or financial institution character will be able to operate with cheap linden in the game. Second Life has proven to be a popular place for companies to set up virtual shop where many players can exchange their favorite something with all kinds of linden dollars.
