From forth the mouth of babes...

Just over a week now, back at the word processor, and Dr Crippen is visiting old friends in the medical blogosphere. And none better than Dr Rant, who draws my attention to a pseudonymous blog in the Guardian. The pseudonym is Alex Thomas.

Alex is a junior medical student and has “lost patience” with GPs.
There will not be blood in the corridors of Whitehall just because some irate GP with his own blog and an inflated sense of his own importance is fuming about his work/life balance. Nor will there be an exodus of highly qualified professionals heading for sunnier climes because this vocal minority didn't get their own way on a few issues. A few hundred people heading off on an extended jolly to Australia does not constitute an exodus. (Full article here in The Guardian)
Splendid stuff, Alex. Splendid.

I have missed Dr Rant’s articulate and reasoned journalism. He sums up the article thus:

I'm thinking......fuck right off you nauseating adolescent.

Dr Rant has such a way with words! And, heavens above, Dr Rant seems to know who Alex is. He even prints a picture. Anyone else who would like to know should take a look at Dr Rant's full article, Traitor in our midst

By the way, Alex, when you have grown up a little, and start paying taxes, you may take a different view about a “few hundred” doctors (training cost to the taxpayer : £250,000 each) leaving the country to go to Australia.

Not to the mention the ones who are staying in the UK but, like Luke Solon, changing careers.

Is that what you are if you have the nerve to oppose the received wisdom of your "superiors", a traitor? A bit harsh isn't it, ill informed may be but a traitor?

Also it was not very sporting of Dr Rant to reveal the true identity of Spider Monkey aka Lana Williams (if indeeed it is her).

Come on Dr Rant what is your true identity? You have shown us hers now show us yours. What is your real name, age, sex, place of employment, your public have a right to know.

(Perhaps while you are at it you might like to throw in your address and bank details too :-) )

On my paranoid days (i.e.everyday), I wonder if Lana Williams is actually a NewLabour stooge. Does she write these articles at all or are thay written by spindoctors in the DOH (no pun intended). Is she part of the deliberate campaign to discredit the medical profession?

As a 2nd/3rd year medical student, she has no real grasp of the realities of working in the NHS. Why is the Guardian (the NewLabour mouthpiece) giving her such a prominent role?

The bit that I find most ironic about this London-centric ex-city type is that she has no understanding about the demographics of General Practice across the UK.

Whether she likes it or not, there is still, even today, a genuine shortage of GPs in some regions. Pay cuts for GPs will not affect the leafy suburbs where she hails from, it'll be the deprived areas where coverage disappears...

Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

If some are talented enough to get it in the papers well good luck to them.

Everyone can reply or attempt to put their side in the same papers.

It is hardly a sign of the much praised "professionalism" to swear, shout and insult and threaten those who do not agree with you.

Frankly I'm ashamed of my "profession" when they act like a pack of hyenas when faced with views they find unpalatable.

Taxes and work have nothing to do with it, this is simply the response of an old duffer who is attempting to yoke authority to age.

Get over yourself.

This is nothing to do with old duffers attempting to yoke authority to age. This has to do with someone who patently has neither the relevant knowledge or more importantly experience, being given and taking a platform that she does not merit.

Do you understand that or are you just another immature & inexperienced arsehole?

Then point that out. I think she wrote very well as for knowledge and experience maybe you are correct. If so then point that out, don't threaten and abuse.

Do not insult at least don't and then argue about the "merit" you or she deserves for your respective views.

We have all been young once, some of us grow up. It's pity you and a large section of the medical profession have not.

I amn't threatening anyone and the abuse is deserved. I am 52 years of age and have worked in the NHS for 25 years. I try to do my best for my patients every day despite the efforts of NewLabour, the DOH and cunts like you.

You "think she wrote very well as for knowledge and experience maybe I am correct!".

She wrote very well but she hasn't a fucking clue! You are even more of an arsehole than I thought!

I was young once, and if I pontifated on a subject I knew little about, I was justifiably castigated for it.

I have grown up. You and Alex Thomas have a long way to go.

I've given my life to my job. Fuck off you cretin!

Matt dear, you were paid I assume so get over yourself.

One only has to briefly examine the blog entries on any number of medical blogs to see the most disgusting language and threats aimed at this young student.

It is quite inappropriate and hardly good medical practice.

I would reply to your "cunts like you" insult but I have an inherent dislike of the sewer and the language it produces, I can only doff my cap in admiration at your existence in such a place, which you obviously feel so at home in.

You have a job and you have been paid for it, well done, neither justifies the bullying and abusive language, nor the intolerant approach to young medical students you display.

I think she does have a clue and she writes better than you do, both are good signs for the future.

"Matt dear, you were paid I assume so get over yourself."

Apart from your condesention luv, what is your point here? Are you suggesting that because I accept pay for my day's work I therefore have no right to complain! I do still believe that there is a vocational aspect to Medicine but this is taking it a bit far!

"One only has to briefly examine the blog entries on any number of medical blogs to see the most disgusting language ...........and hardly good medical practice"

Swearing is allowed on many medical blogs - it is a means many use to vent their frustration at, for instance, people like you. It has nothing to do with medical practice.

"I have an inherent dislike of the sewer and the language it produces, I can only doff my cap in admiration at your existence in such a place, which you obviously feel so at home in."

Ooh, sticks and stones! I feel suitably admonished. I see you do the moral superiority thing as well as condesention. I thought these attributes are now not encouraged in our "Profession".

"I think she does have a clue and she writes better than you do, both are good signs for the future."

Her future as a tabloid journalist maybe. I don't think the the ability to wax lyrical about a subject she knows fuck-all about necessarily will make her a good Doctor.

There, I feel better now!

anonymous,

I'd rather be subjected to a bit of swearing than patronising condescension,

either way, none of your irrelevant banter really addresses the facts that the piece was very poorly researched and very low in quality,

nice pc tactics to of bringing out the 'bullying' accusations, I would suggest that the author Alex Thomas has been rather guilty of a lot of rather unpleasant vindictive bahaviour in various places,

matt was not bullying, he was just stating what idiots (in slightly more colourful language) some people are being, and quite frankly fair enough,

the likes of Alex Thomas are happy to dish out abuse and vitriol but are not happy to take anything in return, your pot and kettle reference would find a much better home with Alex Thomas

I must assume you are as vulgar as those you choose to support then.

Like a baying pack of hyenas you have attempted to cut off acceptable debate and a viewpoint which is as valid as yours.

I cannot see anything factually incorrect with her piece, I think the first few paragraphs accurately sum up the situation and the dire character of some members of the medical profession is evident on this and other blogs.

If you were wise you would ask why you feel threatened and moved to abuse. The answer may be illuminating for you.

indeed, what lovely flowing prose Ms Williams, shame that bullshit is still bullshit, no matter how eloquently composed!

(strange how you continue to ignore all the points that directly dismantle that weak Guardian piece, you prefer to wrap yourself in empty rhetoric)

The only "bullshit" here is the fulminating drivel some bullying members of the medical profession spout when faced with a view different from their own. Mediocrity is never attractive.

I'm not Ms Williams at all. Never met her, never likely to.
