Dr Crippen is unwell

I took a strong dislike to the recent ad hominem attack mounted by the Taxpayers’ Alliance on various local authority chief executives many of whom earn substantially more than the TPA bogey salary of £100,000. The Chief Executive of Kent has been singled out for particular comment.
The number of council "fat cats" earning salaries of more than £100,000 rose by a third last year, the Taxpayers' Alliance said today. The pressure group said it was an "insult" that such high salaries were being paid on the back of above-inflation council tax rises. The Local Government Association responded that compared to senior salaries in the private sector, taxpayers were getting very good value. According to data obtained by the Taxpayers Alliance group under the Freedom of Information Act, the ten highest town hall earners were paid more than the prime minister. (The Guardian)
The second highest earner was
Kent chief executive Peter Gilroy - who banked £229,999.
Why use the word "banked"? Is it some sort of insidious innuendo to suggest that he did not "earn" the money?  How can everyone be so rude about this man? Council chief executives always used to be lawyers, but it seems the field has now broadened. I thought I would do some research on Peter Gilroy, whom I felt was being subjected to such unwarranted and unfair criticism, and try to mount a defence for him. This is what I found.
Peter joined local government following a career in nursing, specialising in psychiatric social work. Following further social work training Peter spent the early part of his career in practice, including attachments to primary health. (Kent County Council)
Peter is a "chief-executive nurse specialist". Dr Crippen has checked into The Priory hospital for a medication review and a short period of recuperation.

"He has a national reputation for innovation and was nominated by the Guardian newspaper as one of the top 100 innovators in the public sector"

And I thought the Guardian was the one remaining bastion of decent journalism. Now it lambasts the very public servants it claims to admire so for the sin of earning decent cash for it.

Why the surprise? Specialist nurses are world leaders when it comes to building empires and creating pointless bureaucracies. And they are all supported (and encouraged) by hospital consultants who need to recruit patients for their pet research programmes which are financed by the pharma industry.

Some of it's useful though. They might even find a cure for your neuroses!

Actually, the pay of those in senior positions in local government is long overdue for greater transparency and closer public examination. It's all about accountability and value for money, two things that have been lacking for too long. What, exactly, is your objection to the information being made available?

I've never understood how anyone can justify paying the chief exec of a local authority more than the Prime Minister, even if said Prime Minister is a vacuuous shit.

Who needs qualifications?

To be Chief executive of Kent County Council? No one. To be a brain Surgeon, everyone. The jobs are not equivalent. Apples and Pears. One needs "experience" to be a chief executive not a law degree.

(Not that experience as a lawyer wouldn't count)

The TaxPayers' [sic] Alliance is what is known in the US as an "astroturf" organisation - just like its US namesake.

Anonymous re "Astro-turf" - silly name and by the way what reason do you have for that claim.

TPA claims 18,000 supporters, and has links to a number of local grass-roots low-tax organisations. Not bad. Surprise surprise business folk and others with a track record of not liking high taxes are frequent supporters. What 'corporate welfare' are they lobbying for? Low taxes and government efficiency, but that is a rather broad vested interest unlike oh compulsory tree inspections or something.

You can argue about what they say, but I assume that if you have to resort to ad hominem you don't really have much to add.
