Nadine Dorries - the "MP nurse-specialist"

My worst nightmare has come true. Until today I was blissfully unaware of the existance of Nadine Dorries. I am not in the slightest grateful to the DK for drawing my attention to her presence and I had to increase my medication when I found out she was, wait for it, an “MP nurse-specialist”.

She has a propaganda website that she calls a blog. It is not really a blog because it does not allow comments. Reading some of her copy, I can understand why she does not allow them. She has just posted an article that plumbs new depths of mawk by purporting to show a picture of a happy 21 week foetus sticking its hand through a hole in the uterus, giving everyone a cheery wave and then making a campaign speech on behalf of the Pro-Life lobby. She calls it "The hand of hope."

I cannot be bothered to go through the spurious pseudo-science that Nadine seems to believe. If you want to see her article taken apart then you have a choice. You may read the DK’s “Mad Nad will believe anything” and “Nad still Mad” or, if you are of a more gentle disposition and prefer to avoid the bad language, turn to the ever excellent Ben Goldacre at Bad Science.
God knows, I am no fan of late abortions, and there is indeed a strong case to be made against them. But not like this. This is utter garbage.

It is worrying that a British MP can produce guff like this. Even more worrying is the fact that, judging from her David Steelish “let's prepare for government” post, Nadine seems to think she is going to be in the next Conservative Cabinet and so, even as we speak, she is furiously reading the Dorling Kindersley pop-up book “So you want to be a Cabinet Minister.”
It's enough to make a man vote Lib-Dem.

Nothing is bad enough to make a man vote Lib Dem.

Oh Lordy. Lib Dem?

This has to be the most outrageous nonsense I've ever read on the internet. Thank you Dr C for highlighting this. The link to Bad Science is also worth checking out.

This is so, so wrong.

A quacktitioner MP? Could be useful if the Lying Scotsman collapses with chest pains - with any luck she'd spend so long going through her protocols that he'd be beyond hope of resuscitation.

The link to BadScience actually goes to the Devil's Kitchen, though it is a fine ranting read.

The bit that gets me - highlighted by DK and Ben Goldacre - is that the surgeon who did the operation says that what Nad says isn't true.. so of course she dismisses this as him lying for fear of "pro-abortion activists" (who I have never heard of shooting or bombing doctors, unlike the militant US pro-life lot).

*sigh*

...all we need to find out now is whether Nad is pro-single vaccines.

Anyway, I note that Nadine's website says she "takes a particular interest in health issues". Be afraid... be very afraid. Though I was even more appalled to find out that she was once on the Education and Skills select committee.

Puhleese Doctor C, don't lump this crazy cow in with all us bona-fide quacktitioners.
She used to be a nurse, obviously couldn't hack it and became an MP instead. Tory, so spends a lot of time listening to toffs drivelling on about bollocks - probably thought she was still on Prof's ward round for the first couple of years.
She's no longer nursing - at least not under the name Nadine Dorries, so technically not a nurse, ergo not a nurse-specialist, and definitely not an MP nurse-specialist. So reduce your medication pronto!
Any chance of a retraction re: the nurse-specialist?
No?
I'll get my coat.
(a proper nurse specialist with an NP degree, twenty years of experience and a shiny stethoscope - which I hope to be able to learn to use one day)

Oh and I voted Lib-Dem. Once.

Apparently she's not interested in vetting her sources.

Clearly a swivel-eyed lunatic but on
the plus side at least she has done a real (and valuable!) job and understands a bit about the real world unlike many of the smug apparatchiks in Parliament.

Dorries bailed out of real nursing pretty early for a more lucrative career peddling big pharma's snake oil to GPs (medical rep) and was, at one point, a director of BUPA for 12 months.

I forger exactly how many abortion clinics BUPA runs...

If you can stomach playing catch-up, John, there's reams of material on Mad Nad at the Ministry, including a thread in which the lurve of her crusade, Dr Sunny Anand, outs in a personal appearance.

Looks from her bio like she hasn't worked in nursing for donkey's years.

Don't get me wrong, she's clearly barking, but labelling her "the MP nurse specialist" just suggests to me that "nurse specialist" has become Dr Crippen's shorthand for "anyone who's annoyed Dr Crippen recently".

Well, nurse-specialist she ain't. as a previous poster said, she left nursing ages ago to follow the well-trodden path taken by many of the brighter ones by becoming a medical sales rep then pursuing a career in BUPA.
Unfortunately the Tories are lacking anyone wanting to pursue the radical policies needed to restore confidence in the appalling NHS. Cameron recently announced he would throw even more money at the NHS by appointing more "health visitors". I recall these people acting like the nursing equivalent of the CID; plain-clothes nurses sent out to pry on new mothers to ensure they weren't abusing their kids.

I agree with Fat Lazy Nurse that not all NPs are quacktitioners. I think that just about anyone knows that if the mother is under sedation that it crosses the placenta and the fetus is as well. The comment about the hand tearing through the surgical line is about as stupid. If the fetus is that strong, it's probably going to be a throwback from the movie "It's Alive." SIGH!

The above link to 'Hand of Hope' just dumps one on her main page now. This link will take you to the March 2008 archives (until the site gets rearranged again!)

She likes the photo so much she posted it twice...
