Dr John Briffa and the Quacktitioner Royal

Still reeling from Dr John Briffa’s attack on Diabetes UK, I was trying to work out exactly what Dr Briffa means when he describes himself as an “integrated” physician. As opposed to the rest of us, I suppose, who are presumably disintegrating.
Finally, I have found an authority for “integrated” physicians. A Royal authority no less. Prince Charles, the Quacktitioner Royal, a man devoted to medical wibble, has his own website entitled “The Princes Foundation for Integrated Health”
Factors like fulfilling work, strong communities, the buildings we live in, our relationship with the natural world and the food we eat directly affect our wellbeing. So the first step in integrated health is helping people to make choices that keep them well and out of the healthcare system. But once somebody is ill, treating their problem with an integrated approach means bringing together mainstream medical science with the best of other traditions. Complementary interventions may range from stress reduction techniques to therapies like acupuncture or nutritional therapy. (The Quacktitioner Royal)Ah! I see. Nutritional therapy is integrated medicine. Integrated medicine uses nutritional therapy.
It’s a big idea. It’s complex. It often calls for unlikely alliances. But there is a growing group of people who are putting integrated health into practice, in all its guises. This website explores some of the ways it can be done. (The Quacktitioner Royal)What more unlikely alliance could there be than Dr John Briffa and Prince Charles, the Quacktitioner Royal himself? And now, each year it seems, the Quacktitioner Royal will be giving out the Integrated Health Awards. And who will be helping with the judging?
Judges this year include Dr. Michael Dixon, Chair of NHS Alliance (which represents primary care) and Dr. John Briffa, the acclaimed holistic doctor, journalist and author. (Integrated Health Awards 2008)
That explains it all then.

That would be Dr Michael Dixon who not only endorses Patrick Holford's Food Is Better Medicine Than Drugs in glowing terms on the cover but was so moved as to write an Amazon review that gums up the eyes with honeyed words.
Why don't GPs such as yourself get invited to adjudicate such awards? A panel of people headed up by Prof David Colquhoun, perhaps - I'm sure that an interesting discussion would ensue. And perhaps the award money would be better spent in disseminating the reassurance and commonsense of services such as Behind the Headlines.
i'm glad to see it's not just our country that has to face this madness. as you probably know our president and minister of health claim garlic and beetroot as better treatment for hiv/aids than antiretrovirals. recently the mec of health for one of our provinces (kwazulu natal) said hiv didn't exist and was a western plot against poor black people.
our minister was following the teachings of dr raath, another vitamin seller. i see raath has recently gone into russia, claiming the big pharmacy companies are responsible for the second world war attack on their country (this was a quote in one of our local papers so i can't really substantiate it, though). quite a nut. maybe your prince and our ministers should get together and compare notes.
Vive la République!
Check out Orac's recent post about "integrative medicine" and the semantic war/pr challenges facing the rational minded.
We're trying to find a better name for the wibble genre. Can you think of one?

Good article.Especially the above. We end up with a justice system again, where many innocent people are locked up again on the basis of an anonymous witness who may have a grudge financial interest etc in cooperating with the Police or whoever wants the defendant put away.
