The nights are about to get longer

Today is the summer solstice. Tomorrow the days start to become shorter. Today, depending on where exactly you are, the time between sunrise and sunset is 16.547 hours. Tomorrow it will be 16.545 hours. Not much difference. But in a month’s time, by the 21st July, the day will have shrunk to 15.845 hours, and that is a significant difference. And so the long haul to 21st December (7.911 hours) starts. Roll on the 22 December (7.912).

Why does this bug me more and more each year?

Ummm as I understand it - admittedly from listening to the BBC on the radio yesterday - today is not the mid-Summer solstice, it was yesterday! This is due to the fact that it is a leap year and we are in fact 1 day ahead. this has not happened for over 100 years but for the 21st century all leap years will have their solstice on the 20th June

I open to be corrected on this, but that is what the technical chap (who sounded awfuly well informed) was saying.

Happy mid-Summer solstice to all :-)

And just to comlicate matters even further - he pointed out that the shortes night is not on the day of the solstice as that day would actually end at midnight, whereas night of course carries on until sunrise, the next day - so there is not so much a shortest night as 2 equally short nights on either side of the longest day

Complicated isn't it?

Love it that they all went to Stonehenge today! hahaha

Im not at all sad (excuse the pun) or suprised that Dr C says "Why does this bug me more and more each year?" Reading this blog, one cannot escape from the fact that he is, in essence, somewhat of a depressive. It would help if he got out more often, or perhaps "emigrated" to the more delightful parts of the country like Snowdonia or Lakeland where the scenery becomes more beautiful as the days shorten and winter draws in.

*******

You'd think wouldn't you? But alas there is a similar, if not identical, comment in each and every one of the comments threads from this "person" - seems to want to sell flashlights/torches - maybe he stole them - or could that be described as being "light fingered"

:-)

Yep. Getting spammed again.

Had 82 of these comments arrive today all over NHSBLOGDOCTOR.

How do they get through the code word?
